Samsung SSD 850 Pro 128 GB

Ideal in order to give back more "power" to a Mac Pro 4.1 (2009) used concurrently by 6 users. I moved my Mac (10.9) + all Home users drives to this wonderfull SSD. Two options for installing this SSD into a Mac Pro : 1. Buy a adapter for your Mac Caddy drive on eBay for around 7 : "2.5" SSD to 3.5" SATA Hard Disk Drive HDD Adapter CADDY TRAY CAGE Hot Swap Plug" - Price 6.99 USD. 2. Buy an Apricorn Velocity X2 Solo or Duo PCI-E Card : Between 99 EUR and 160 EUR. Advantage of the first option : Cheap and easy, but limited by the SATA-2 speed interface of the Mac Pro (300 MB/s) Advantage of the second option : You could get a throughput of 500 MB/s with one SSD and 800 MB/s with two SSD + You keep your original Mac Caddies for traditional HDs. I finally installed the second option. How I did it : 0. Very IMPORTANT : Make a full backup of your system with Time Machine on an external drive; I do aslo a backup of all my critical stuff on Backblaze Cloud service. 1. Install the Apricorn Velocity card with the Samsung 850 Pro on it. 2. Reboot your Mac on the HD 3. Your Card and SSD are now detected. 4. Go to disc utility and let the SSD be formatted in HFS+ with journaling activated. 5. insert your original Mac OS DVD in your Mac and press "C" while rebooting. This will reboot your Mac on the original Mac OS DVD (delivered initially with your Mac). 6. Do not re-install the Mac OS; just go to the Disk Utility and "replicate" your "Macintosh HD" drive to the new SSD 850 Pro. 7. When it is done, reboot your Mac on your original Macintosh HD 8. Once rebooted, you will see on your system the SSD available with all its new data. Please check that everything seems OK 9. Rename the Samsung 850 Pro - SSD in "Macintosh SSD" 10. Go to System Preferences and select the SSD as new startup disk. 11. Reboot and enjoy the speed of your new machine. 12. I then stopped the machine again, took the original Macintosh HD away and kept it in a safe place as a safe archive drive of my system. 13. Do a new full backup with Time machine and Backblaze. With Backblaze, I was positively surprized that it recognized the new SSD and I had only to backup the "delta" from the latest HD backup. I tested the speed of the new SSD standalone with the Apricorn card : Read 497 MB/s - Write 506 MB/s. What is also impressive versus the HD is the access time which very shorter. I didn't activated the TRIM on this non-Apple SSD as this require to disable the kext signing security setting from Mac OS 10.10. I made intensive write testings with some VMs installed through VMWare Fusion on this SSD drive and even after some load VM testing, I saw some temporary performance degradation; but a few quiet time later the garabage collector seems perform its job quite well and everything was back to initial performance again. With a guarantee of 10 years on this SSD and the support directlty available from Coolblue during this full period (Confirmed by the Coolblue Hot Line), I fully advice this one for an old Mac Pro. The whole familly was very surprised by this new very performant machine. It is still quite expensive, but for this performance and very long guarantee period, it worth the investment. Note of my Mac Pro 2009 configuration : - Dual Xeon 2,24 Ghz - Octo Core - 24 GB RAM (Well needed for this type of configuration) - 3 HD (WD and Samsung) - 1 Samsung SSD 850 Pro 1 TB - 1 Apricorn Velocity x2 PCI-E card.
